Background of the Study
Class attendance is a vital factor in the academic success of students, especially in fields such as nursing, where both theoretical knowledge and practical application are crucial. At Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, nursing students are expected to attend lectures regularly as part of their academic curriculum. Attendance in class is often associated with better understanding of the material, more frequent interaction with instructors, and an overall higher level of engagement in the learning process. Several studies have shown that regular attendance positively impacts academic performance, as it allows students to engage with course content, participate in discussions, and gain a deeper understanding of key concepts (Akinpelu et al., 2023).
For nursing students, where the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical practice is paramount, class attendance becomes even more critical. The complex nature of nursing curricula requires active participation, and students who attend classes regularly are more likely to understand clinical concepts, improve their problem-solving skills, and apply their learning to real-world situations. Research also suggests that students who regularly attend classes demonstrate better time management skills, higher levels of motivation, and a stronger sense of accountability (Sulaimon & Aderemi, 2024).
However, there are instances where students may struggle with attendance due to various factors such as personal challenges, health issues, or work commitments. These absences can lead to gaps in knowledge and negatively affect academic performance. Given the importance of both class attendance and academic performance in the nursing education process, this study aims to explore the relationship between class attendance and the academic performance of nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of regular class attendance, nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, often face challenges that may impact their attendance rates. These challenges can result in absenteeism, which may hinder students' academic performance, particularly in complex subjects that require continuous learning and engagement. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which class attendance influences academic performance, and to understand whether students' absences are associated with lower grades or difficulty in mastering clinical concepts.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the relationship between class attendance and academic performance among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
2. To examine the factors that influence class attendance among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University.
3. To evaluate the impact of class attendance on students' understanding and retention of nursing concepts.
Research Questions
1. What is the relationship between class attendance and academic performance among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria?
2. What factors influence class attendance among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University?
3. How does class attendance affect nursing students’ understanding and retention of academic material?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between class attendance and academic performance among nursing students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
2. Factors such as personal challenges, health issues, and work commitments significantly affect class attendance among nursing students.
3. Students with higher class attendance perform better academically compared to those with lower attendance rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and will assess the relationship between their class attendance and academic performance. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported attendance data and the inability to account for external factors affecting academic performance, such as clinical placements or personal study habits.
